Oil Filters Speed 20SD

Postby Delagiste » Sat Jan 27, 2018 1:55 pm

Following advice on here earlier I have thrown away the old gauze filter (useful only for trapping camel dung!) and am substituting a modern paper filter, I have used the bottom piece of the old gauze job by cutting it off, facing it the lathe and silver soldering a 1/2" upstand made from a piece of copper pipe on to it to locate the new filter. This is now dropped into its original location and tapped into place and will remain there forever I hope.
The new filter has to have the top and bottom plastic flanges reduced in diameter so that it will drop into the filter casing, this is easy enough to do, I rotated it against my grinding wheel slowly which made a great job of it, it is now just the right length to be trapped by the spring loaded lid.
The filter in question is a Fram CH 9232 or WIX WL7289 and is from the E320 Mercedes of 2005-2006

Very interesting! Did you capture the whole process photographically? If (hopefully) so, can you please send to me: johno8@aol.com

With thanks!

Thank you David for sending those photos! Much appreciated.

As I replied to David, the design of the SP 20 engine differs from that of the SP25.

Has anybody made a similar adaptation on a SP25 engine?

Hi again John, I have adapted my Sp 25 engine so that the full oil flow passes through a modern screw on oil filter. However I'm afraid I'm in France now until the beginning of April and the car and details of how it was done are back in England. If you can wait until I get back I'll be happy to send some photos and details.

David,

Could you put an article in the Bulletin about it? We need much more of this in the Bulletin and far less of people posing in front of their shiny cars having picked up a gong for something that nobody else cares about.

Cheers
Angus
