Steering box

Postby trampintransit » Fri Aug 30, 2013 2:50 pm

The users manual for the car says that a booklet would have been supplied with the car giving details on how to adjust the steering box. Alas mine has gone missing.
What is the steering box? and can anybody advise on adjustment?

Hi,

I can't help with the exact leaflet but my TA14 came with an AOC book - Alvis TA14 50th Anniversary Collection - which does contain an article on the steering box. It's a reprint of a Motor Trader Service Supplement from 1958, so it's generic, but presumably close enough to the original equipment to be considered appropriate for inclusion. There is a section explaining the basic functionality, followed by maintenance and adjustment notes, before the article goes off into the realms of fantasy (power steering!), at least for TA14 owners.

I could try to scan the article but it's fairly poorly printed on A5 paper. I notice the AOC now sells the whole book on CD for £10. I reckon it would be money well spent, as it is well over 200 pages. Let me know if a scan might help you in the short term, though.

Do you know what?.....I've got a feeling I've got the book in DVD form....I think I bought it thinking it was a manual. I'll have a look and see if it's got the steering box article.

Hi Guy,
Let me know if you don't find it. I have an article on the steering box. It is pretty easy to adjust. You basically just tighten it up to remove as much free play as possible.

Regards,
Paul.

Can't find that DVD for love nor money! There is a slotted shaft on the side of the box nearest to the engine, with a huge locknut. My guess was to loosen the locknut and screw that slotted shaft in to see if the slack reduces?

There is quite a useful link here: http://www.allardownersclub.org/wordpress/?page_id=2675

It's probably a bit more practical than the article on the DVD/in the book. That suggests the shim removal (or redistribution) method noted as being ineffective in the Allard article.
